Why Does AI Make Sales Work Harder, Not Easier?
AI takes the simple tasks and leaves people with the hard ones. BCG's 2026 AI at Work survey found 67% say AI has taken over simpler tasks, leaving more complex work, 60% say the bar for good work is higher, and 41% report more mental strain. For sellers, what's left is the most demanding part of the job: live judgment calls with buyers. Guidance that reduces cognitive load in those moments helps. Nayak is designed to do that.
Who It's For
For sales leaders, enablement teams and reps who expected AI to lighten the load and found the work more demanding.
- Reps who spend less time on admin but feel more stretched.
- Leaders seeing strain rise after an AI rollout.
- Teams evaluating whether new AI tools add to the load or reduce it.
The Problem: AI Removes the Easy Work First
BCG surveyed close to 12,000 employees, managers and leaders for its 2026 AI at Work report. Its findings show a job that gets harder as AI takes on more.

BCG also found close to half or more spend more time reviewing and correcting AI output, or managing and directing AI. The time saved on routine tasks is partly spent on new, harder ones.
What This Means for Sellers
| AI takes on | What's left for the seller |
|---|---|
| Account research | Deciding what matters to this buyer |
| Meeting notes | Reading the room while the meeting happens |
| First-draft emails | Checking AI drafts and handling the replies that need judgment |
| CRM updates | Making the call when a buyer changes course |
The live call is where the load peaks. A rep is listening, planning the next point, recalling earlier meetings, watching the clock and reading several stakeholders at once.
Why Cognitive Load Matters
Cognitive load is “the effort being used in the working memory,” and working memory “is extremely limited in both capacity and duration.”
Source: Wikipedia, “Cognitive Load”.
Psychologist John Sweller developed cognitive load theory in the late 1980s. Heavy load can hurt performance, and too much information can impair decision-making.
That explains the strain BCG measured. When the remaining work is mostly judgment, and judgment happens under load, people feel stretched. It also sets a test for any new AI tool: does it remove load from the hardest moments, or add to it?
How to Reduce the Load in Live Sales Calls
- Take memory off the rep: Carry context from earlier meetings automatically so reps don't have to recall it mid-call.
- Show one signal, not ten: Guidance should surface the one thing that matters now, not a stream of prompts.
- Keep it optional: Hints the rep can use or ignore don't add pressure.
- Handle the admin: Capture notes, commitments and next steps so the rep can stay in the conversation.
- Train on real calls: Build the skill in the moments it's needed, so it becomes habit rather than another thing to remember.
How Nayak Lowers the Load
Nayak is designed to reduce what a rep has to hold in their head during a call. Meeting-to-meeting summaries carry decisions, open concerns and commitments forward, so reps can prep accordingly.
Nayak's real-time human judgment guidance and EQ surface the signal that matters, as a short, optional hint. Nayak also handles meeting admin, such as tracking the agenda as items are covered, and captures what the buyer said they need after the call.
Questions about AI and cognitive load
Both. BCG's 2026 survey found AI saves time on simple tasks, but 67% say it leaves them with more complex work and 41% report increased mental strain.
AI takes routine work first, so what's left is judgment-heavy, especially live buyer conversations. That work carries high cognitive load.
The effort used in working memory, which is limited in capacity and duration. Heavy cognitive load can hurt performance and decision-making.
Nayak carries context between meetings, surfaces one relevant optional hint at a time, and handles meeting admin, so reps can focus on the buyer.
